Maya, I keep a pen + paper notebook compiled of quotes, tidbits from craft lessons, and my most favorite poems I stumble upon through my studies. I just added this one to my journal today. Thank you for bringing beautiful art to the world.
This is why I read poetry: I can’t always relate on an intimate level to what is expressed, but I so appreciate those who can share these intimacies so well that I have that moment of empathy. And I think it’s a type of sharing that women do better than men, so I’m also grateful for the insight…
Thanks, Svetlana! And, again—that’s what’s so lovely about reading and writing poetry: it so concisely expresses both sweeping emotions and simple truths, sometimes in just a few lines…
Thank you SO much for re-sharing this poem! And thank you to Poetry Magazine for first publishing this poem in 2020 (to correct the attribution! It wasn’t first published in 2024 🙏🏻).
Thank you so much for writing it, Maya. I fixed the attribution and the formatting error, my apologies for this being incorrect the first time! Thank you for this gracious correction.

It was an uncanny poem to comment on the weekend I’d just had. I’m sharing it all around.
Agree with Angela and Kim. It always makes me cry.💛
Possibly my favorite poem of yours though it’s too hard to pick just one. 💛💛
Throwing it back and seeing my own face as it disappeared into dark water. Beautiful!
Thank you!!!
Every time I read this poem I feel all the feelings. Maya performs magic with words.

I love this curiosity and openness you display. It's so deeply human.
