Profound on so many levels. I have been losing someone to mental illness, where the possibility of mortal loss is always hovering, and this poem's imagistic clarity let me see it all from a distance, and brought me to tears. Gorgeous language, brilliant writing. Thank you, Molly (and OPD for printing this!).
This language feels as buoyant as its subject yet the poem is fully human too. ONLY POEMS introduced me to Molly Zhu and I’ve been a fan since. Her poems dance and we feel the gravity underneath the dancer's feet too. Her poems each stand out as an experience, not just an account of what-happened-when like so much published narrative online. I get the experience, the hesitations, the yes and no of the girl in this poem. It’s going to ring like the after-resonance of an Eastern temple bell the rest of the day.
