the other pt. 2

my orders were to surveil and be
surveilled, endlessly. from inside
my orange hazmat suit, they
reflected hazy and bright in my eye.
the distance not impossible
to overcome, between
my errored tongue and trembling
hand, i cobbled together
an understanding. and once
i understood my enemy i, myself,
could not remain the way i was.
I am being reminded of how much we other those we don’t understand, separate them from humanity.
