I've tried capturing these exact feelings for years in my writing.. this hits deep. I guess, yes, the trick is to keep believing enough to open those doors, right? And yet.... thanks for this poem.
i've been trying to figure out what the heck to say because i've had this page open in a tab since it was posted. only occasionally do i get a poem that i'm not just appreciating the form or cleverness of. one that really digs in deep. perhaps it's the brevity, the succinct splash of liquid words that flow so cleanly. perhaps it's the dedication to an experience we've all had, of denying ourselves a joy in pursuit of what? a second marshmallow? i still haven't really said any of what i feel about this poem. it rules. love it. pinning it to my wall high school locker style.
Kelly never fails to disappoint. My favorite of this group is "How You Respond to the Rain." All of these, but "Rain" most of all, have so much packed into every line. Kelly is also an incredible teacher and writing coach.
