Anne always delved into the darkest places in her poetry…sex, mental illness, loneliness and all the rest that well up in that foul rag and bone shop of the human heart. She is hard to read sometimes, and hard not to read. Poets tread a fine line between sanity and the abyss. The best poets.

Anne Sexton was always (or at least usually) ascerbic but I don't recall ever reading such gamey sadness from her before. It's hard to be present at and impossible to look away from.
